What I've Learned Building Saunas in Woodstock

Woodstock is where Atlanta's sprawl meets the foothills. The subdivisions off Trickum Road, Towne Lake Parkway, and Highway 92 are full of two-story homes on slabs with bonus rooms upstairs or unfinished space in the garage. That's the build I do most here: a traditional sauna in the bonus room or a garage conversion, 6x8, with the electrical run from the panel on the other side of the wall. The newer homes have 200-amp service and open slots, which makes them the easy jobs. The 90s and early 2000s builds usually need the panel looked at first.

The Woodstock wrinkle is the slab. Most of these homes have no basement — it's slab-on-grade, which means no below-grade moisture to fight but also no basement to tuck the sauna into. The sauna goes on the main floor or in the garage, which means the room it goes into has to be able to handle heat and steam without the rest of the house noticing. That comes down to the vapor barrier and the ventilation. Mechanical exhaust on a timer, twenty to thirty minutes of post-session airflow, vented outside — not into the attic. Skip it and the bonus room smells like a locker room by summer.

Outdoor builds are the other half of my Woodstock work. The lots are bigger than intown, setbacks are workable, and a barrel sauna or a custom outdoor cabin in the backyard is a real option here. The mistake I see on Woodstock outdoor jobs is the same one I see everywhere: placement too close to the fence or under the big pines where the wood never dries. Give it sun and airflow. A sauna that dries between sessions lasts decades. One that doesn't gets soft at the base in five years.

I build throughout Woodstock, including Towne Lake, the Trickum Road corridor, downtown Woodstock, Eagle Watch, and the 30188 and 30189 zip codes. Bonus room, garage conversion, or an outdoor build on the back lot — the consultation is free. Tell me about your space and I'll tell you exactly what fits.
